Teen Talk Radio Podcasts

Friday 14th of June 2013
First up, host Nicole O'Dell shares her thoughts about Father's Day. What is a father? What is a dad? How can a teenager have a good relationship with Dad? Where's Nicole's dad? Huge questions! No way we'll even come close to answering them adequately in a fifteen-minute radio segment. But we can try making a dent in them. Join me! Next up: Creston Mapes, Fear has no Name It was more than a break-in. More than a stalking. It was personal. When a stalker targets his family, journalist Jack Crittendon must uncover who the person is and what his motives are--if he is to protect the ones he loves. It will lead Crittendon into a world of behind-closed-door secrets and faith gone awry, as does his investigation of a missing pastor, whose apparent suicide is more than it appears. Each move Crittendon makes weaves him tighter and tighter into a web of lies, greed, hypocrisy, sin, and danger. He believed he'd never give in to fear. But that was before. And holding on to his faith won't be easy. Nor will keeping his family safe, and ending the terror. Because that might require him to step over lines he never dared to cross.

I also have a few questions from readers for Laura--and just to keep it real, I'm not going to clue her in to what they are. It'll be more fun this way. ;) Tune in!

Erin Bishop, On Whatever The Whatever Girls are intentional moms and intentional daughters. We exist to empower girls to choose God’s best for their lives by exemplifying the pillars of Philippians 4:8: “whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” This week on Teen Talk Erin and I will be chatting about the mother/daughter relationship. We'll dive into some peer pressure issues and cover some of the pitfalls of poor choices. Then, Erin has some great information for us about the 2014 Whatever Girls conference. You don't want to miss this information, so tune in!

Stefne Miller writes about authenticity...but that's not what we're going to be talking about! She has some of the coolest things going on! Her book, Collision, is being made into a movie and her books Salvaged and Rise are being made into a mini-series. This is happening right now as Stefne is fresh off the plane from LA. Don't you want to know all about it? I know I do! Next up, Shannon Deitz joins us to chat about healing after abuse. Shannon Deitz is a woman in love with God and excited about her faith. But it wasn’t always that way. She was only 3 years old when the abuse began by a family member. While still a teen, her boyfriend was tragically killed in an auto accident, and she began to question a God who would claim a young man with so much life yet to be lived. At the fragile age of seventeen, she was raped and she began to distrust a God who would allow such a thing. Again, as a freshman in college, she was raped a second time, and she began to earnestly put as much distance between herself and God as she possibly could. ... Deitz purpose in founding Hopeful Hearts was to help give a voice to those who can’t speak out, to help and encourage survivors of abuse.

But they don’t know the whole story, and she was much, much worse As she moves through the halls of power, her heart struggles between devotion to the gods she worships, the prince who loves her, and her thirst for revenge. She sparks a battle between her strangely powerless gods and the God of palace administrator Obadiah—a God who confronts her with surprising might. First up on Teen Talk: Along with the release of her book Glass Girl, Laura Kurk, our On Hollywood Columnist has written an amazing and through-provoking post called: Is Hollywood paying attention to domestic and dating violence against women? Here's an excerpt: Four women are killed every day by their partners. Two in ten teen girls admit to being physically or sexually abused in relationships. One in ten teen boys admits to being abusive. Smart girls, girls like you, can get caught up in unhealthy relationships and they’re not sure how it happened. A combination of low self-esteem, the “I can handle it” attitude, and the belief that their relationship is special, triggers the storm of abuse. Is Hollywood paying attention? Next up: Jill Williamson, Captives One choice could destroy them all. When eighteen-year-old Levi returned from Denver City with his latest scavenged finds, he never imagined he'd find his village of Glenrock decimated, loved ones killed by enforcers, and many---including his fiancee, Jem--taken captive. Now alone, Levi is determined to rescue what remains of his people, even if it means entering the Safe Land, a walled city that seems anything but safe. Omar knows he betrayed his brother by sending him away to Denver City, but helping the enforcers was necessary. Living off the land like nomads and clinging to an outdated religion holds his village back. Jill Williamson talks "Captives" and answers YOUR writing questions!

First on Teen Talk, Heather Burch: Halflings scribe Heather Burch pits her 17-year-old heroine Nikki Youngblood up against her most ominous opponents to date, a demonic seeker and a fully powered Damon Vessler, in the eagerly awaited third book in the supernatural series, AVENGER (Zondervan; $14.99; April 2013). Next: On September 7, 2008, Penny Whipps' son Kyle died of an accidental heroin overdose while he was away for the weekend attending a series of concerts with friends. Two days before he died, Kyle called and told me about his plans and whom he was going with. When Kyle mentioned one friend in particular, it gave me cause for concern because this friend had not been a good influence on Kyle in the past. I voiced my uneasiness but he assured me that everything would be fine. That was my last conversation with Kyle and two days later he was dead. At Just1X, we believe so strongly that students can help save lives by allowing the story of Kyle’s death to encourage and challenge them to break the code of silence and possibly become a lifesaver for their friends.

The Carpenter’s Miracle tells the tale of a humble small-town handyman, Josh Carey (Mathison), who finds himself at the center of media attention after attempting to resuscitate 12-year-old Luke Quinn (Grantham), the victim of a drowning accident. When the boy shows no signs of life for an hour, Josh consoles Luke’s mother, Sarah (Harrison), in the emergency room. But when he lightly touches the boy with his hand while offering a heavenward wish, the boy is suddenly revived. Many in the town consider it a miraculous act. But Josh is not religious and doesn’t believe he had anything to do with Luke’s recovery, even after he seems to heal several others in the following days. When local coverage of the story catches the eye of national tabloid news producer Jack Reardon (Holmes), he dispatches his most aggressive reporter, Delia Tynan (Redmond) to try to land an exclusive interview with Josh, Sarah and Luke. Although they politely decline her cash offers, Delia is relentless—to the point of potentially disrupting a blossoming relationship between Josh and Sarah. But when Josh learns his elderly mother needs expensive emergency surgery, he must make a decision that could change his life and the lives of those he cares about most. GMC TV, is gearing up for the world premiere movie of their Easter movie, Carpenter’s Miracle. The film will be premiering on Saturday, March 30th and Sunday, March 31st. Cameron Mathison is best known to millions of fans of “All My Children” as heartthrob Ryan Lavery.

First up on Teen Talk, Erin Bishop, founder of The Whatever Girls The Whatever Girls are intentional moms and intentional daughters. We exist to empower girls to choose God’s best for their lives by exemplifying the pillars of Philippians 4:8: “whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Next up: Dr. Tara Fairfield on Forgiving your enemies As Christians we are taught to be forgiving, but how do we handle the people who really hurt us, who persecute us, gossip about us, betray us? Luke 6:27 says to Love your enemies, and do good to those who hate you. How is that even possible?? Forgiveness is about the state of your heart and your relationship with God. Unforgiveness is bondage to the situation or person and it provides an opportunity for the enemy to destroy you, your relationships, etc. He seeks to steal, kill, and destroy you and bitterness is a great way to do that because it can lead to actual, physical ailments. Tune in to Teen Talk as Nicole O'Dell and Dr. Tara Fairfield, author of Makai Queen, answer questions like: What are the Scriptural benefits to forgiving someone? If I forgive someone, does that mean I have to stay friends with them? Do I have to be nice to girls who are mean? What if someone won’t forgive me?

Brain Tumor, Baby, New Album? Victoria Griffith released Wellspring in the Wilderness, and while recording the 10-song CD, learned she was pregnant with her first child, followed soon after with news of a brain tumor requiring immediate removal. Navigating this circuitous life path, Griffith has emerged successfully on the other side with a riveting testimony and a CD filled with songs that exude hope and grace, and perfectly showcase the singer's stunning, country-inflected vocals. Go Teen Writers The question we hear most from new writers is, “How do I get published?” And the answer is: Respect your dream Every writer’s journey is different, yet as we’ve reflected on our experiences and those of the writers around us, we've seen time and time again that those who are successful are the ones who had the patience and endurance to stick with this writing thing. They didn't look for shortcuts (at least, not for long), nor did they quit after five, ten, or one hundred rejections. Stephanie Morrill and Jill Williamson have written a combined two dozen speculative and contemporary novels for teens. They also blog obsessively at www.goteenwriters.com. When not writing or blogging, they can be found at the teen table at writer's conferences or wherever chocolate is being given away. Come hang out with Stephanie at www.stephaniemorrill.com and Jill at www.jillwilliamson.com.

First up on Teen Talk, Matt Ouellette: Thoughts That Fell From a Taco Shell is a captivating journey of humorous discovery in practical Christian living. What began as a journal scratched onto four Taco Bell® napkins grew to a full-fledged account of one man’s desire to impress God. Is it even possible to impress God? Laura Kurk's top toen list of romantic Hollywood scenes. Dont' miss this one! Laura Kurk said: I was about sixteen when I realized that guys feel romantic love as deeply as we do. Previous to that, I thought they tolerated our talk of romance by disappearing into their heads where they could think about cars and guns and bears and stuff. The evidence -- the body of literature, poetry, plays, and songs written by MEN who understood what it meant to love a woman -- suggests otherwise. Next up on Teen Talk, Bethany Jett joins us to introduce her new Choose NOW column, On Friendship: From loneliness to popularity, best friends to frenemies, being a girl is tough. If you’ve ever enjoyed delicious confidences whispered late into the night, sleepover giggles, or shared Best Friends jewelry, you understand how great friendships can be. But if you’ve experienced exclusion from a group, betrayal, peer pressure, or outright bullying, you know how deep cruelty can hurt. We’re gonna talk about it all! Can’t wait to swap secrets, and if anyone is giving you problems, I’ll help you work it out.

Wouldn’t life be a whole lot easier if every decision you had to make was as clearly spelled out as the Ten Commandments? Seriously, we don’t stay up nights wondering whether it’s okay to put a hit out on somebody or rip off the local Mini-Mart. We’d get a lot more sleep if Moses had brought down another tablet that included: “Thou shalt not date until age 16.” Think of the parental arguments you’d be spared from. Join me with Author, Nancy Rue, as we tackle a question that usually starts niggling at the edges of a girl’s mind: To date, or not to date? Following Nancy Rue is a special re-airing of an interview I did with my two daughters, Natalie and Emily. So fun! Of course, if he had, I wouldn’t be writing this post for you. Matter of fact, I’d be out of a job . . . Join me with Author, Nancy Rue, as we tackle a question that usually starts niggling at the edges of a girl’s mind somewhere in her teens, if not slightly before.
