Clutter and disorganization costs us time, money and energy even as it undermines our happiness. The simple act of being able to find what you need when you need it saves time and frustration. Being able to sit down and relax without feeling like you have to put things away gives you peace. And feeling like you can invite friends and family over without having to spend a month clearing out clutter and cleaning whatever was under the mess is priceless.

This week we're taking a look at simple strategies for organizing our lives and our homes. Angela Cody-Rouget, founder of Major Mom household organizers, is joining us for a first-hand look at the simple things that get us organized and keep us humming along.

Angela is a woman who learned some important things early in life.  She'd moved with her family 13 times by the time she was 14.  Because of this, she learned to keep her load light and not get attached to stuff.   Angela understood what it was like to make new friends and then have to leave them.  Today, Angela puts a high value on her church, family, friends and staff, as she cherishes those strong connections. The struggles she went through while growing up have created a truly tenacious spirit in her, as well as fostering tenderness toward others who face considerable challenges.

Angela is an amazing mom, wife and business owner. She has grown her company from one to 15 in five years. She is on a mission to restore order to the world one household at a time. If anyone can do it, she can.

January 2, 2012 Heart and Home ~ Guest: Amber Singleton Riviere

Click here to Listen via Podcast Player or Click here to download off iTunes

Today's show is our ‘Hearth and Home' episode where we're talking about creating homes and adding the warmth of home to your celebrations. Last December I had the privilege of meeting a woman who is on a mission to create that for a lot of kids who don't have one. It's an exciting dream from an amazing lady who will share her story with us.

We'll also be talking about New Year's resolutions including how to set yourself up for success. And, in Christmas Corner, we'll look at the truth about scaling back for the holidays.

As the founder of Fund the Farm, Amber Singleton Riviere wanted to find a way to have a greater impact on foster care within the U.S.  After deciding to adopt a child of her own, it didn't take long for her to decide it would be from foster care.  When she saw the sheer number of kids who had been abused, abandoned, neglected, or for whatever reason ended up in foster care, she was at first overwhelmed and heartbroken.  Over time, though, she started to see that she had room for these kids or, rather, could make room, and so began the idea of Fund the Farm.

December 12, 2011 Making Your Own Rules ~ Guest: Carey Sue Vega

Click here to Listen via Podcast Player or Click here to download off iTunes

This week we're talking about the rules, making them and breaking them. We're chatting about some of the common issues like "Do I really have to send Christmas cards?" and "Who do I invite?" It's equal parts etiquette, dreams and reality, all mixed together to create your wonderful holiday season.

Sharing secrets with us for using etiquette to enhance our family gatherings is Carey Sue Vega. She's a mom and an etiquette expert who understands how and when to use the rules and when to bend them. She'll be sharing some of her tips and stories to help us have a brighter holiday.

Carey Sue Vega is an award-winning expert in business professionalism and social etiquette.  The Ponca City native has done consultant work for businesses, attorneys, doctors and organizations around the world - literally.  For ten years, she honed her skills with an international audience, as Cruise Director for the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Vega has been featured in numerous radio and television shows and magazine articles, sharing her expertise on topics such as The Rules for International Dining, Cell Phone Courtesy, Whom Is Introduced to Whom? and that ever-popular topic of How To Mingle Without Being Cornered by the Boring Guy Wearing a Leisure Suit.

But don't expect this Miss Manners to have a white bun; Carey Sue is "regular person" who has simply learned to use professionalism to her advantage.

"Etiquette is not about being hoity-toity with your pinky in the air," says Vega.  "No matter what situation you are in, having good conversational and social skills help you feel comfortable and help the people around you feel comfortable."

Not only does Vega teach adults and teenagers how to choose the right fork and dance the cha-cha-cha, she can hold her stemware and Hors d'oeuvres in one hand while shaking hands with the other.

Since 2001, Vega has served as director for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Chapters of The National League of Junior Cotillions and The International League of Corporate Cotillions.  She is married to her cruise-line sweetheart, Ricardo Vega.  After years at sea, the two decided to drop anchor in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 2000.

This week's show is all about you and the warmth and wonder you bring to your holidays. This isn't just about crafts. We'll be chatting about all things homemade; from music to gifts to decorations to atmosphere - we'll cover it all!

Joining us with her own special magic is Nikki McGonigal. She'll be talking to us about handmade holidays with ideas that add love and your special touch to your celebrations. Her new ebook titled 'Handmade Holidays' is chock full of great ideas and amazing inspiration for adding your own special touches in a way that make a celebration uniquely yours. We'll chat with her and she'll share some of that inspiration with us.

Nikki, In Stitches started from my passion for crafts, and grew into a craft blog.  I wanted to highlight all the great, creative ideas out there, and it has grown bigger than I ever could have imagined.  As a life-long crafter and one-time teacher, writing a craft blog was the perfect outlet for me to share.  Teaching others to craft and cultivate their creative ideas is a passion of mine.  And honestly, creating my blog and watching it grow is the most fun I have ever had.  Nothing makes me happier than witnessing the range and resourcefulness of all my readers’ creative ideas.

I enjoy putting fresh twists on traditional crafts. Mashing up modern methods and old school techniques is a great source for creative ideas in crafting. Even though I have a passion for all things crafty and for blogging, I'm still a seamstress at heart! I'd like to think that I have the skill of someone who's been sewing and crafting for years, with the style of the hip, young girl I am! So please enjoy Nikki, In Stitches and feel free to stop by and share your ideas with the entire community there.

October 17, 2011 Dealing with Dough ~ Guest: Hollis Colquhoun

This week we're going to be dealing with dough. No, we aren't baking cookies, but we'll do something just as sweet. We're going to talk about money; making it, saving it and spending it. One of the most stressful aspects of the holiday season is finances and we want to give you a path to enjoy your holidays without the financial strain.

For some expert advice, we have Hollis Colquhoun joining us. Hollis is a financial expert, author of the award winning book Women Empowering Themselves: A Financial Survival Guide, and a martial artist. She'll be sharing her wisdom along with her financial self-defense strategies and I'll be sharing some tips and tricks I've found or used myself.

Hollis worked on Wall Street for 20 years and was one of the first female institutional bond traders. She later became an Accredited Financial Counselor for a nonprofit credit counseling agency and counseled thousands of clients from around the country.

Most of her clients were women in financial trouble after divorce or death of a spouse, mainly because they had no clue how to manage their finances. Hollis wanted to rectify this situation so she and a co-counselor wrote the Amazon Bestseller and 2011 National Indie Excellence Award Winner: Women Empowering Themselves: A Financial Survival Guide to give women a basic understanding of net worth, budgeting, saving, cash flow management, credit reports, goal setting and available resources.

Hollis is passionate about personally and financially empowering women; she gives financial education seminars and writes articles for a variety of online sites such as the Examiner and Technorati and for magazines including Personal Excellence, Self and More.

Hollis has been practicing martial arts for 17 years earning black belts in both Karate and Tae Kwon Do and she teaches self-defense classes for young adult women.

September 26, 2011 Being Beautiful ~ Guest: Jennifer Robin

Next Monday we're back to beauty again but with new topics and a different spin. We'll discuss looking good and feeling good, that's feeling good inside and feeling good about how we look on the outside. We'll be learning tips and tricks for feeling better for the holidays and everyday.

As a special treat Jennifer Robin, author of "Growing More Beautiful" will be joining us to take an inside look at being beautiful. Jennifer has a unique perspective and uses her artist's eye to teach us how to see things in a new light. She'll share her thoughts on how we can look and feel beautiful along with some holiday tips.

For 25 years, Jennifer Robin has gone behind-the-scenes of women's lives: into their closets, their make-up drawers, and their dressing rooms. As owner of the image consulting firm Clothe Your Spirit, she has worked with hundreds of women as a color and wardrobe consultant, personal shopper, and make-up artist. Widely known in the industry for her innovative and artistic use of color and texture, she also gives private instruction in color analysis and color theory and expressive painting.

Jennifer's first book, Clothe Your Spirit: Dressing for Self Expression, was published in 1987 and pioneered the connection between one's inner essence and clothing, gaining a wide readership and changing many women's perception of what that overused expression "dress for success" truly means.

As she continued to work with clients over the years, Jennifer discovered her deep love of painting. Before long, her brilliantly colored mixed media and pastels were on exhibition. Her work continues to gain recognition, as well as devoted collectors.

It is her experience as a professional artist - capturing the light and colors of a mustard field at dawn, or filling her canvas with a celebration of the human body - that profoundly helped to shape her revolutionary ideas about beauty and fashion. Jennifer combines her consultant's expertise with her artist's understanding that an authentic inner life is a deep, rich source of beauty. She is passionate about freeing women from our society's critical, youth-obsessed media chatter. And she firmly believes that every woman, with the right guidance and attitude, can become more beautiful.

As Jennifer witnessed her clients' transformations, she felt compelled to get her message out to a wider audience, determined to bring about a long-needed cultural change. The result is her groundbreaking new book, Growing More Beautiful: An Artful Approach to Personal Style. With pages filled with breathtaking imagery, this book is nothing less than a work of art. But more importantly, Jennifer Robin's life-changing message will help each woman who reads it see herself as she never has before - with the generosity and expertise of an artist.

In addition to her newly released book, Jennifer reaches out to her readers in a myriad of ways - through her articles, blog, and newsletter, as well as through her many speaking engagements. With her background in theater and vibrant personality, she leads popular workshops based on the principles of Growing More Beautiful.

September 12 Glitz & Glam ~ Guest: Missus Smarty Pants a.k.a. Leslie

It's bling time on Heart Filled Holidays! This week we're going to have a great time talking about fun stuff including things that make our holidays sparkle and shine. We'll be talking decorations and wardrobes, people and gifts. We're also bringing in an expert to help us take a special look at our wardrobes. Joining us will be Mrs. Smarty Pants, a.k.a. Leslie.

"With the name "MissusSmartyPants" I'm often asked who I am and how I got my fashion business started...

I have always been passionate about fashion and style. As a young girl I'd have to say my Barbie dolls would have won the "best dressed" award, if they had such a thing, LOL! However, as a teen I was real skinny...but by dressing my best I found I did not feel as awkward and it really boosted my self-confidence! In college I studied fashion merchandising. My emphasis was on fabric weaves and textures. I was hoping to be a fabric designer one day, but ended up working in the retail industry. A couple of years later I found myself a young mom with a stay-at-home lifestyle. For years I gave up on "style sense" and put everything into being a mom. After a couple of years, I felt I "lost myself" . I was in a frumpy state and needed to put what I knew style-wise to good use and re-do my own style--PRONTO!

Fast forward years later, I've developed a "do-it-yourself" way for women (like me) to makeover their style. It's a step-by-step way to get your style back based on the shape of your body!"

What's become known as The Gratitude CookieTM is the main tool used to do that.

The company ships customized Gratitude Cookie packages and other special products to customers worldwide and Lori's reputation for going above and beyond on behalf of her clients is well known. Her success has led to many requests to share her knowledge with other start-up food entrepreneurs and she recently created and hosts a workshop called "You Should Sell That - Creating a Wildly Successful Business from Your Family Recipe".

Lori writes monthly articles for WomenGrowBusiness.com and posts semi-regularly on her own blog, RabbitRouser.com. She also delivers an entertaining and inspirational presentation called "The Little Known Secrets of Gratitude and Reciprocity and How They Can Positively Super Charge Your Profits!"

  1. Name Gladys W. Kennedy says: Very helpful and entertaining interview. I found Vanessa's personal examples and insights about our inherent "essential whisper" to be extremely helpful! I particularly enjoyed her story about how by her listening to and following her essential whisper or (inspiration) to clean out her pantries and closets that it allowed her to focus more clearly on the development of her website...despite the fact that she worked on the website a week later than she previously planned. To me, that was a great example of how we should stop, listen, and follow our inner urgings or "essential whisper" and intuition.

March 7, 2011 ~ Savvy Advice for Enjoying Your Holidays like a 'Rich Chick' - Michelle Matson

What kind of spender are you? Find out this week on Heart Filled Holidays radio as Michelle Matson shows us what kind of spender we are and how we can use it to our advantage. She'll be sharing tips for not just keeping us on track in our financial lives, but also telling us what to do when our spending has jumped off the tracks. Michelle Matson, author of 'Rich Chick: the 9 Must-Have Accessories Every Girl Needs to Create Financial Confidence, Independence, and Freedom… the Smart Way' will be showing us how we can enjoy our life today while still preparing for our financial future. She'll point out some of the big money pitfalls that can ruin our plans and our holidays, then give us simple tips for skipping right around them.

Michelle Matson has worked in the investment and financial services industry for 17 years. As a receptionist for a successful Cincinnati-based financial advisor, at twenty-years-old surrounded by (mostly) men more than twice her age, she had to learn fast and keep up. Michelle “grew up” in the financial industry, learning about investing by observation, experience, and planning and attending many, many seminars. In 1993, Michelle was presented with the opportunity to work with Mark Matson, at his young, start-up investment advisory firm, Matrix Asset Allocation. At the time, Matrix was a small money management company with less than $30 million in assets under management and a handful of financial advisors using the program. As the company grew, Michelle had the opportunity to experience all aspects of building and running a financial organization from investor accounts to marketing, training, writing and developing training programs and materials. In 1998, Michelle co-authored the book “FlashPoint: Mastering the Art of Economic Abundance,” with Mark. By 2009, Matrix had grown to $1.7 billion in assets under management and evolved into a multi-faceted investment organization now known as Matson Money that provides investment management, training, and coaching for financial professionals and investors alike. Currently, Michelle is the Vice President of Matson Money and continues to develop training tools, educational materials and programs for investors and financial advisors. Michelle lives in suburban Cincinnati, with her husband Matt and their three daughters.

February 21, 2011 ~ A Changing Holiday - Vivienne McNeny

Do you ever find yourself struggling to maintain your holiday traditions? Are life's changes challenging your celebrations? We've all experienced change in our lives, but we get caught off guard when it's time to celebrate, forgetting that those same changes will affect our gatherings, traditions and holidays.

This week we have a very special guest, Vivienne McNeny, who'll be sharing her story with us. Vivienne is the host of The Sociable Homeschooler radio show. She is happily married with 4 children who are growing up and moving out. As a result of the changes that were happening, she found her traditions were threatened and her holidays were in jeopardy. This week she'll share the details of what happened and how she turned it around so she could still love her holiday.

Vivienne was born in Hostert, West Germany, on a British Army Base.  She was educated at a convent boarding school in England and quips that she left home at the age of eleven!

She has travelled extensively and lived in London, Beirut, Teheran, Guernsey and Marbella until she settled down in Texas with her husband. There she was a corporate executive during the day and a wife and mother in the evenings and weekends.  Then she decided to homeschool her four children while they were still too young to object. Sixteen years later three of them have graduated from college, the fourth is still in attendance and all of them are contributing members of society.

Now that “spare time” has returned to the table, Vivienne has written a book, THE SOCIABLE HOMESCHOOLER, encouraging like-minded parents, from all walks of life, to consider homeschooling as a viable alternative to traditional school.  She is seeking to dispel the myth that all homeschoolers are nerds by showing parents that her children succeeded academically without once being chained to a desk.  She hosts an Internet radio show, The Sociable Homeschooler, where she encourages and mentors homschoolers each week, no matter where they are on their homeschooling journey.  She can be heard live each Friday afternoon at 4pm Central Time.  Podcasts of her past shows can be found at www.toginet.com and on iTunes.

Vivienne has outlived all the family pets and still resides in Garland, Texas with her husband and whichever child is currently in residence.
