Pamela Otten, the Financial Mom, is the CEO of Pamela Otten LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor located in Wisconsin. Pam is a Financial Advisor who loves to help women understand the "mysteries" of the investment world. She firmly believes investing is not rocket science - women instinctively know the investing rules - and we still don't follow them.

Pam will take you back to financial basics, help you become more confident in your financial future, and teach you how to tell your money where to go (in a very good way). She will talk about almost anything if you can give her a good story about how it relates to your finances!

Pam is an unashamed Christian, and a Qualified Kingdom Advisor (www.kingdomadvisors.org), which means she is trained and committed to integrating Biblical principles with her investment advice. Many of the best money principles have roots in the Bible.

Because she lives in a very old house, Pam soaks up home improvement shows to secretly dream about being a carpenter and interior designer. She believes housekeeping is boring, and cooking is only fun when you actually have time to do it.

Pam loves many types of music, and is a church musician - she directs a traditional choir and a contemporary choir at her church, plays piano and organ for services, and plans lots of fun music stuff.

Before everything else, Pam is a wife of 30 years to the best husband ever, a mom to three amazing young men, now has TWO daughter-in-laws (YAY), and is blessed beyond belief.

Pam's passive investment approach is based on Modern Portfolio Theory, which includes more than 50 years of academic research and Nobel prize-winning economics. She specializes in working with successful women business owners and entrepreneurs, and women in transition due to job change, death, or divorce.

Money Smart Week: October 8-15

October 8-15 is Wisconsin's Money Smart Week. Money Smart Week in Wisconsin is sponsored by the Chicago Federal Reserve and the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions. This year we have an abbreviated calendar of events, a transition used to introduce the move to a nationwide week of free financial literacy, starting in April of 2012.

Money Smart Week classes in Sheboygan County this year are being held in two locations: Sheboygan LTC (Job Center building), and the new Plymouth Intergenerational Center building, in Plymouth.

Did I mention classes are free? Presenters volunteer their time to teach the classes, and every presenter signs an agreement stating they will not sell anything during their classes. I'll say it again - no obligation, free financial education!

Study after study shows the majority of women still feel they are not educated enough about their family finances and investments, and as a result are uncomfortable making financial decisions. Here's a great opportunity to get some free education, and change your financial future.

What follows is a shameless promotion of the classes I am teaching this year for Money Smart Week:

Pamela Otten in the Press

Excerpts from the Sheboygan Press Article - Sunday July 11, 2010, Business Section Front Page

ON THE AIR - Plymouth financial advisor Pamela Otten shares her knowledge through Internet radio show

By Deanne Schultz, Press Correspondent

With the catchy beat of Donna Summer's "She Works Hard for the Money," playing in the background, Plymouth financial advisor Pamela Otten start her weekly broadcast on TogiNet radio.

Her program, "Intelligent Investing with Pamela Otten," shares information on a wide variety of topics, such as "Breaking Down Money Myths," "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," and her personal favorite, "Success Principles Learned From American Idol."

Otten's "Financial Mom" blog, launched this past January, has received many more hits than Otten anticipated, and the success of her radio show has also left her pleasantly surprised.  It's all in a day's work for this 51-year-old working mom and wife, who has devoted her career to educating women about the world of finance.

"One of my missions is to educate women so they aren't intimidated by investing," Otten said.  "I want them to understand that it's not difficult math; it's not rocket science, and they don't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to understand it and do it well."

Easier said than done for many of her clients and callers, but Otten understands their hesitation, using her skills as a financial advisor, wife, and mother of three boys, to skillfully guide people through the often confusing world of money.

"Women are more comfortable talking to another woman," said Otten, who has been married to her husband, Scott, for 29 years.  "Women, in particular, want to be educated, but they're not sure where they can find the time."

As part of her platform of educating her listeners, Otten knew she had to reach them whenever and wherever it fit into their busy lives, which is why the idea of a radio show held such great appeal.

It didn't start out easily.  Otten had to plan and work around several setbacks.  Central to her plan was a goal of incorporating her Christian faith into the format, and after contacting several local radio stations who were willing but unable to help, she turned to technology for a well-timed boost.    . . .

On her June 23 broadcast of "Intelligent Investing," Otten's topic was "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and she discussed the discipline and planning that goes into creating personal wealth.  She shared several habits common to many millionaires, including the need for a budget; knowing and keeping track of how much is spent on major categories like food and housing; setting both short- and long-term goals, and their habit of having only one or two credit cards to their name.

Otten's goal of educating women comes from her personal experience with clients who have unexpectedly lost a spouse, now suddenly faced with making informed financial decisions.

"The truth is, nine out of ten women will be alone at some point in their life," Otten said.  "We need to know what's going on, and start participating in the financial decisions of our family."  . . .

Otten has overcome her initial hesitancy about entering into the media broadcasting fray, realizing that her radio show and blog have come to mean a great deal to her personally.

"This has become very, very important to me," she said.  "The whole part of educating women has become a platform that I want to build my business on."

Listen to Pamela Otten's radio show, "Intelligent Investing with Pamela Otten, the Financial Mom," every Wednesday from 5 to 6 pm at www.toginet.com .  Otten welcomes questions, comments, and stories.  Podcasts are available on Toginet's website, and free IPod downloads are available on ITunes.
