Are Parents EVER Good Enough?

This week's show highlights:

  • Good Enough Parenting
  • Summer Camp and Kids

Combing the aisles at Target in search of the best deal on Cheerios, it hit Rene Syler like the stench of a dirty diaper on a hot summer's day. Not only is perfection overrated its utterly impossible! Suddenly empowered, she figuratively donned her cape, scooped up another taco kit for dinner and Good Enough Mother was born.

Then and there, Rene decided she wanted to pull back the curtain and expose the myths about modern motherhood; it's both terribly rewarding and ridiculously stressful, exhilarating and exhausting, fun and frustrating. She now spends her time running www.goodenoughmother.com, a leading community for moms who understand the challenges of kids who think they know everything but won't eat anything, neighbors for whom failure is not an option and mothers-in-law who just KNOW you're doing it wrong.

In a little under two weeks, children will begin heading off to summer camp - many for the first time. As you know, this can, at first, be stressful for the child and parents. However, it is an important rite of passage that gives children the independence, leadership and character-building skills they need to be successful.

Steven Schlozman, M.D. is associate director of The Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He also serves as course director of the psychopathology class for the MIT-HMS Program in Health, Sciences and Technology. Dr. Schlozman practices child and adult psychiatry at MGH, where he also serves as the primary consultant to the pediatric transplant service. He received B.A.s in English and biology from Stanford University, and his M.D. from the Dartmouth-Brown Program in Medicine.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

This week's show highlights:

  • Motivating our teens and teens self-regulating

Of course, we all know the teenage years are the most precarious ones in our children's' lives.  By the time they reach high school, physically and intellectually they're nearly adults, but their emotional maturity is still probably a decade or more away.  Add to that equation the new-found freedom that comes with obtaining their first drivers licenses, not to mention the growing allure of physical intimacy, alcohol and recreational drugs.

Risky behavior typically results, even among "good kids," who have learned to disguise their conduct.  Human nature being what it is, parents are often blind to being manipulated, choosing instead to see only what they wish to see.  Parents of straight "A" students who get in trouble are almost always shocked that it could happen to them.

An unplanned pregnancy, drug or alcohol abuse, or arrest for intoxicated driving are just a few things resulting from poor decision making that can effectively derail a teenager's plans for the rest of their lives.

Tia Ross is a motivational expert who can offer advice to your listeners on how they can be more effective parents and help them navigate their way through their kids' difficult teen years.  She understands that we are not born with natural parenting skills, but rather we need to learn how to communicate before we can pass along our wisdom to the next generation.

Janai Mestrovich aka Grandma Boom, is a 40 year passionate advocate and pioneer who creates and implements stress management self-help skills with children as young as 3. Her approach is twofold, teaching the parents/teachers/daycare personnel how to help children integrate the skills into daily life to build self-awareness, self-care, self-control and self-confidence. Janai's expertise in 3D learning that she created uses objects in the environment to teach children to connect to their inner world of mind/body/emotions as a system for building self-worth from the inside-out. Her educational and television programs are award winning. She taught at the University of Oregon and Southern Oregon University, lives in Ashland, Oregon and is an outrageous grandmother! She has authored seven books available on Amazon, six for parents and children and her self-help memoir endorsed by Doris Day entitled, "The Grandma Boom Chronicles...More Alive at 65.

This week's show highlights:

  • Allow your children to fail
  • Save money with coupons

Jessica Lahey is an educator, author, and speaker. She writes the bi-weekly column "The Parent-Teacher Conference" for the New York Times, is a contributing writer for The Atlantic, and a commentator on Vermont Public Radio. Her new book is The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.

As a single mom of a growing son, Stacey Cox had to learn to buy on a very strict budget because she didn't make a lot of money.  She had to adopt the concept of getting more for less through sales, discounts and coupons.  Prior to leaving for the store, she would create her shopping list based on what they needed, what she wanted to cook that week, and current sales.  Since her family had some favorite foods that were also easy meals such as pasta, she would stock up on pasta whenever it was on sale. By learning to stretch her money at the grocery store she also learned to look for coupons and sales when she shops for clothes and any other items her family needs.

August 11- Making Music and Memories

This week's show highlights:

  • Creating your own music
  • Adoption adventure

Just as Mozart and Bach did their entire life, Philip Sheppard  (maestro cellist & renowned music composer) has gamified music so that anyone (from the 6-year-old novice to a budding musician) can compose, play and share their own piece using the new digital music game Compose Yourself (from ThinkFun).

Compose Yourself is a set of musical "building bricks" that encourages kids to "play with" music just like they would with a construction kit. The digital music game features a deck of transparent cards, each representing a measure of music that can be viewed in four possible orientations. First, flip, rotate and arrange cards to build an interesting pattern. Then, enter card codes onto an exclusive website to hear the composition played back instantly. You can easily share a link to your composition via social media or email; or download and print your own sheet music.

Can you imagine going from a family of 4 to a family of 12? That's exactly what happened to Mike & Hayley Jones, who never imagined that when they set out to adopt a child from Sierra Leone, this venture would lead to the "Jones Dozen!"  They write about their adventure in their book, At Any Cost: Overcoming Every Obstacle To Bring Our Children Home.

According to the National Sleep foundation 85% of teens get less than 8 hours of sleep per night.  A new study published also proves what many parents and teachers have been suspecting all along: sleep in adolescents has been in steady and significant decline for the past 20 years.  Less sleep leads to issues in concentration, poor student performance, difficulty solving problems, skin problems like acne, and safety issues such as driving drowsy and can lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior. Dr. John Schuen is director of pediatric pulmonology at Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Dr. Mindy McNeal believes the only behavior that can't be changed is death, less is more, routine is like a playpen...it keeps the good in and the bad out, every person deserves quality health care and education, you can hate the behavior and still love the person, family and friends keep me sane, and ambiance does mask my lack of cooking skills.

Teens are Sleep Deprived and Overexposed on Social Media

This week's show highlights:

  • Are our children sleep deprived?
  • The impact of parents oversharing on social media

Are our children sleep deprived?  Studies have shown that teens need 8-10 hours of sleep to function best, but sleep in adolescents has been in a steady decline. According to the National Sleep foundation 85% of teens get less than 8 hours of sleep per night.  A new study published also proves what many parents and teachers have been suspecting all along: sleep in adolescents has been in steady and significant decline for the past 20 years.  Less sleep leads to issues in concentration, poor student performance, difficulty solving problems, skin problems like acne, safety issues such as driving drowsy and can lead to aggressive or inappropriate behavior. Dr. John Schuen is director of pediatric pulmonology at Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Parents warn children "Behave what happens today will go viral tomorrow."  But what happens when parents overshare on social media? Are they putting their kids at risk?  Many of today's "helicopter" parents are failing to observe a "no fly zone" around their own children.  After warning children about the risks of oversharing on line, parents are actually the worst offenders. Recent studies have shown that parental oversharing on line and in social media, may present a long term health and safety risk for their children; information that stays with the child for life. Dr. Adelle Cadieux, pediatric psychologist, shares why she feels parents may be the culprits.

She also dishes up filter-free conversations with her fellow mom friends (you know you want to listen), and introduces you to guests whose take on all things parenting just might make you spit out your drink - or raise a glass in their honor.

Can Women Have it All? And is that what they truly want?

Why, if given the choice, does one mother choose full-time employment and another choose to stay at home?  In her insightful and fresh new look at the discourse, The Roads Taken:  Complex Lives of Employed and At-Home Mothers (Miniver Press, 2014), Deborah Kahn dives head first into this debate, examining the complexities of the home/employment conundrum.  She provides a unique approach, as she serves as an advocate for all mothers, rejecting the too frequent assumption that mothers who are employed and have a fulfilling job are the ones who "have it all" and those who do not are second class citizens.

Karri-Leigh is BACK! We will dish about over-the-top celebrity children's birthday parties and celebrity maternity wear! It's all about the baby bump!

Hot Topics with Tara and Special Co-Host Regina Garrepy

Comfy Couch with Karen Lynch

Karen Lynch was an unlikely person to become one of the first female cops in San Francisco. Raised by a counter-culture tribe in summer of love Haight-Ashbury, she was taught to despise "The Man." But when the San Francisco Police Department was forced by court order to hire women, she found herself compelled to prove to the world that women could cut it as cops, a betrayal that caused her police-loathing mother to brand her a Nazi.

Good Cop, Bad Daughter is an often humorous, poignant adventure story of Karen's journey from pot-smoking Cal student, to Renaissance bar serving wench, to street cop. Recounting the story of the first women cops, she reflects on life with her bi-polar mother, and comes to realize her chaotic past unwittingly provided the perfect foundation for her chosen career.

Celebrating DAD DAY!! June 3 at 11:00am ET

At Parent Nation, we LOVE dads! To celebrate them we feature them the first Tuesday of every month!

We call it Dad Day!

This week we feature Travis Breeding and his recent blog surrounding the controversy of the recent shootings in Santa Barbara and Mental health.

Richard Greenberg is a father of four and the author of "Raising Children That Other People Like to be Around".  A native of Los Angeles, California, Richard graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor's degree in English in 1976 and immediately went to work as the personal assistant to Art Garfunkel.  Choosing to stay in Los Angeles and marry his childhood sweetheart, Richard became active in the television industry while he and his wife, JoAnn, began building their family.  Three sons and one gorgeous, intelligent, and flawless daughter later, the Greenbergs were regularly asked how they got "such good kids."  In response, Richard wrote "Raising Children That Other People like to be Around."  His objective was to offer logical, common-sense guidelines for people creating their own families and to help young parents, especially mothers, understand a father's point of view.  You can read more of Richard's parenting tips, tools, and triumphs on his blog, http://www.commonsensedad.com, by following commonsensedad on Twitter, or by liking his Common Sense Dad fanpage on Facebook.

Clint Arthur is a graduate of the Wharton School of Business, a successful entrepreneur with over a decade of experience running his own gourmet food company, and the #1 Bestselling author of "The Greatest Book of All Time," "The Last Year Of Your Life," "Daddy Loves You," and "What They Teach You At The Wharton Business School."  His famous personal transformation experiences, keynote speeches, and frequent appearances on Network TV and syndicated radio shows inspire millions of people to live larger, more intensely, and with more impact on the world.
