Emily Willingham is a research scientist and science journalist, with her Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin, and a completed postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric urology at the University of California, San Francisco. Willingham experienced about every breastfeeding complication possible including thrush, mastitis, poor latch due to tongue-tie, and extreme pain. Tara Haelle is reporter and journalist with a master’s degree in photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin. She had a retained placenta that required manual surgical extraction, struggled with partial secondary lactation insufficiency, and breastfed one of her son’s until he was 3.5 years old. Both authors struggled with post-partum depression. Their writing has been featured in the New York Times, Scientific American, Slate, Discover, Politico, Everyday Health, and Forbes among other outlets.
