Dr. Lynn Hellerstein of Vision Beyond Sight speaks with Dr. Dan Press, optometrist, owner and clinical director at Park Ridge Vision, to talk about the impact of vision to learning in preparation for August’s back to school and Vision and Learning Month. Are your children visually ready to learn? How well is your child doing at taking in the information through vision? Dr. Press discusses the importance of visual processing evaluation for kids - not just general/routine eye exams - and vision therapy. Discover the signs and symptoms that parents and teachers should look out for in students. Learn about tracking problems and other vision issues for children, especially for those with learning disabilities and developmental delays. Do you think your kid needs help? Find out how to find the right eye doctor for visual processing issues through OVDRA and OEP.
Dr. Press also talks about being a third-generation optometrist like our host Dr. Lynn, and the impact of his renowned father, Dr. Leonard Press, on his future as an optometrist. He also shares how her daughter has undergone vision therapy, and how the experience of handling this as a parent sheds further light on what it means to care for your kid, their vision and learning.

“Vision is so much more than eyesight. The emphasis of pediatrician screenings and most routine eye exams is simply on whether or not a child can see clearly when they’re looking at a chart 20 feet away and whether or not the eyes are healthy. Those are critically important but there is so much more to vision when it comes to learning and the demands of the classroom environment that unless you are checking those other areas of vision, then you’re not sure whether or not your child is equipped to handle the classroom demands. What we want to try to communicate is that the first thing that we need to be looking for when it comes to visual processing beyond eyesight is ‘How well is your child doing at taking in the information through vision?’” – Dr. Dan Press
