Smells Like Teen Spirit

This week's show highlights:

  • Motivating our teens and teens self-regulating

Of course, we all know the teenage years are the most precarious ones in our children's' lives.  By the time they reach high school, physically and intellectually they're nearly adults, but their emotional maturity is still probably a decade or more away.  Add to that equation the new-found freedom that comes with obtaining their first drivers licenses, not to mention the growing allure of physical intimacy, alcohol and recreational drugs.

Risky behavior typically results, even among "good kids," who have learned to disguise their conduct.  Human nature being what it is, parents are often blind to being manipulated, choosing instead to see only what they wish to see.  Parents of straight "A" students who get in trouble are almost always shocked that it could happen to them.

An unplanned pregnancy, drug or alcohol abuse, or arrest for intoxicated driving are just a few things resulting from poor decision making that can effectively derail a teenager's plans for the rest of their lives.

Tia Ross is a motivational expert who can offer advice to your listeners on how they can be more effective parents and help them navigate their way through their kids' difficult teen years.  She understands that we are not born with natural parenting skills, but rather we need to learn how to communicate before we can pass along our wisdom to the next generation.

Janai Mestrovich aka Grandma Boom, is a 40 year passionate advocate and pioneer who creates and implements stress management self-help skills with children as young as 3. Her approach is twofold, teaching the parents/teachers/daycare personnel how to help children integrate the skills into daily life to build self-awareness, self-care, self-control and self-confidence. Janai's expertise in 3D learning that she created uses objects in the environment to teach children to connect to their inner world of mind/body/emotions as a system for building self-worth from the inside-out. Her educational and television programs are award winning. She taught at the University of Oregon and Southern Oregon University, lives in Ashland, Oregon and is an outrageous grandmother! She has authored seven books available on Amazon, six for parents and children and her self-help memoir endorsed by Doris Day entitled, "The Grandma Boom Chronicles...More Alive at 65.

So pull up a chair, shake up a cocktail, and kick up your heels while you tune in to the refreshingly real talk about what it takes to be a functional - and fun - parent in today's wild world of raising kids.
