Making Time For Yourself

Simple Ways You Can Improve Your Quality of Life

It’s easy to forget about practicing self-care when your busy schedule prohibits you from adding much more to your to-do list. On today’s episode of SecondWind, we have Hope Flansburg on to discuss everything relating to self-care from body positivity to work-life balance. She reminds us that making time for ourselves doesn’t have to be such a time consuming task.

Hope is an author, Wellness and Self-Care Educator, and owner of Hope for Health Wellness. She plants seeds of hope by teaching others how stress impacts their emotional and physical health, while sharing complimentary layers of self-care to promote healing. She wants to help you decrease stress, anxiety, and improve overall health to live the quality of life you crave free from continued symptoms and deteriorating health.

Hope began writing sixteen years ago as part of her own healing process. She now uses her fiction romance novels to bring a voice to the exact scenarios that break us. Through stories of vulnerability, courage, and healing, these books can be used as a tool for social emotional awareness, and to inspire and empower others. With an exquisite mix of suspense, darkness, lightness, and personal growth, she sends the message that existing is reason enough to receive abundance in this life, and out of our darkest times can come our greatest achievements.

"You hear all the time that it is really important to own our “no”, but I think what's even more important is that we know what our “yeses” are. If we can define our yeses, it’ll help us find that balance of where we’re giving our time, where we’re giving our energy, and so we don’t get led to burn out and overwhelm all the time to where we feel that we aren’t showing up and giving the love that the people around us deserve as well”

  • How to turn your darkest times into something great

  • Our society is impacted by the “disease of being busy” or stress and anxiety

  • We tend to focus so much on loving others more than loving ourselves

  • How Hope helps those who feel their busy schedule prevents them from practicing self care

Why You Should Separate Performance From Self Worth

A Discussion on Your Value, Healing, & Finding Your Path

The way we view and value ourselves is oftentimes tied to the work we do. In this episode, Cyrina Talbott dives deep into her own experiences with having her identity attached to her career, and how she eventually felt burned out. She speaks on the danger of determining your self worth through how much work you do, and feeling the need to prove yourself. Through self healing, we see how it is possible to take your life on a different path and grow from there.

Cyrina Talbott’s mission is to help business owners accomplish their goals, purpose and vision. She helps them overcome limiting beliefs and mindset blocks that stand in the way of that. Her defining moment was when she was 27 and started a homeless shelter. It triggered all of the unhealed areas in her life that she hadn't dealt with and brought them to the surface. She completely burned out from people pleasing and non stop work. She couldn't say no because she was trying desperately to prove her worth. When that business closed, she went home and cried, ate lots of chocolate, gained 20 lbs. and started to learn the most important lesson of her life- that her worth doesn't depend on her performance.

"My life changed from constantly needing to prove myself and show people my value from the outside, and trying to get that external validation to knowing that I’m valuable even when I’m home, even when I’m not performing, even when I’m not doing what you like, even when I say no.” Cyrina Talbott

Say "Yes" To Your Heart

Becoming Familiar With Your True Goals & Needs

It is fairly common to find yourself following a path that lacks the excitement and passion we all deserve to experience in our life. Today on SecondWind With Joyce, our guest Julie Wood shares how women can determine their desires, needs, and how to fulfill them by listening to their heart. What started as her own journey around the world to discover her own dreams and aspirations has turned into a mission to help other women reach the same level of enlightenment in their own lives.

Julie K. Wood is devoted to helping soulful women get clear on the dream in their hearts and have the confidence to go after it. For most of her life, she was living her mother’s dream - pursuing success in a man’s world. She graduated from an Ivy League college and rose to be a managing director at a top advertising agency in New York City. She often felt unfulfilled and uninspired, but she was so busy being who she thought she was supposed to be that she had no idea who she really was or what else she wanted to do. It was only after giving it all up to say yes to her heart - traveling through 69 countries with her now-husband on a 5-year Spirit Journey - that she deeply connected to her own truth, joy and power. She got clear on her own HeartPath: to support other women to connect to their heartfelt truth and have the courage to express it and live it. She now believes that true success is feeling free to be authentic, embracing your fabulous-ness and expressing honestly from the heart. It’s living your dream. As a coach and teacher, she guides women to walk their own HeartPath - not the path they were raised to walk. She teaches them to embrace their worthiness, own their confidence and love themselves enough to step to their edges, express what’s uncomfortable and embrace a life of freedom and flow.

"It sounds so simplistic but the main takeaway is the world is beautiful, the world is safe, and there are amazing people wherever you go.” - Julie K. Wood

  • Women across the world have similar experiences

The Conscious & Subconscious Mind

Healing The Mind, Body & Community

Getting a better understanding of your subconscious mind is a key part of developing your conscious mind. This week we have Amanda Blain on to explain some of the connections we have between our mind and body, and why knowing our own unique connection is a crucial part of our overall wellness. We also learn that working on your healing makes you more empathetic and understanding to others. She discusses certain obstacles in our journey such as shame, and how we can move around it. With a deeper understanding of ourselves, we will be able to differentiate between who we truly are, and who we are as a survival mechanism.

Through yogic psychology and medicinal movement, Amanda Blain discovered that intuitive living, inner balance, and self-fulfillment are inside jobs. After working in the corporate world for over a decade, Amanda served in the U.S. Peace Corps in rural South Africa. There, she discovered the interconnectedness of the psyche, body, and spirit while training with her mentors, holistic health research pioneers and co-authors of The Healer Inside You, David Patient and Neil Orr. Since that mentorship, Amanda has reprogrammed her brain and nervous system to overcome longstanding PTSD from childhood trauma, and she has learned to cultivate heart coherence, a scientifically quantifiable balance between the mind, energetic heart, and body, which enhances intuitive knowing and inner-flow – even amid challenges and transitions. Over the past eight years, Amanda has completed over 2,400 hours of experiential training in yogic psychology, energetics, and medicinal and therapeutic movement. She has delivered personal development training throughout the world in the United States, South Africa, Greece, Palestine, and Israel. She strives to cultivate a classroom of nurturing energy which feels safe and welcoming to all – despite cultural and experiential differences. Her offerings are designed to help students facilitate groundbreaking self-discoveries required for personal evolution. Amanda approaches life, the classroom, and the student with a devotion to unlock authenticity, inner wisdom, and an ever-expansive compassion for all.

Creativity, Community & Clarity

How Art Therapy Helps You Take On Core Issues In Your Life

Women have a tendency to prioritize the wants and needs of those around them causing them to feel disconnected from themselves. On today’s show, my guest Anne Walsh helps us to dig deeper within ourselves to see who we are, and what we want outside of our roles as a mother, wife or employee. She emphasizes that a sense of community for women, especially mothers, is essential to their wellbeing. Without these group discussions among peers, these women are likely to feel isolated handling the unspoken hardships of motherhood.

Anne Walsh is an art therapist, writer, public speaker and mother of two. She chose to pursue graduate studies in art therapy out of a desire to connect more deeply with people who struggle to communicate what they are experiencing.

Her work started out with older adults diagnosed with dementia living in long term care. When nurses requested burnout prevention workshops on the weekends, Anne’s work was noticed by a recruiter and she was hired to teach Psychology, Leadership and Recreation for Older Adults classes at Algonquin College. Anne taught for twelve years until she became a mother. Hoping to achieve work-life balance, she chose to return to her calling as an art therapist on her property in Kemptville, Ontario (Canada).

When her eldest daughter was being bullied at school, Anne launched a series of workshops teaching prosocial behaviors through art as a way to create more collaborative classrooms. She published two children’s books and devoted much of her business to the mental health of children and their families through classroom workshops and after-school art programs for families.

Realizing that parents needed additional support, Anne focused on programs that would give mothers a sense of community. She discovered the need for mothers to speak openly about their experiences with others and documented their stories by writing a book, Out of the Mouths of Moms. Anne has been actively involved in creating an infrastructure of support for mothers in her community. Her efforts have earned her the Chamber of Commerce Business Innovation Award.

Covid has caused Anne to pivot her business by providing online support through her online art therapy sessions, creative journaling group, ghostwriting services and speaking circle. These days, she mostly works with women in their 40s and 50s who have lost touch with their true Self through and are coming home to themselves through creative directives, self-expression and self-exploration.

"Women don't see their strength, they see everyone else's strength" @annewalshauthor

What You’ll Learn from This Episode:

  • How we can develop our ability to adapt to the changes that life presents us
  • The advantages of art therapy as opposed to the traditional verbal-communication-centered therapy

Redefining What Sexy Means To You

Regaining Your Confidence and Becoming Self-Aware

Joining The Fight Against Human Trafficking

How Car Racing And Fundraising Are Saving Lives

The prevalence of human trafficking can be underestimated when you aren’t faced with it personally, or if you are unaware of the signs and methods of trafficking. On today’s show, Renee Brinkerhoff sheds light on how significant this illegal business is globally, and how she is putting an end to it through her nonprofit organization, Valkyrie Racing/Valkyrie Gives. We learn how we can get involved in this fight by donating, and how this money will be used to change the lives of vulnerable women and children.

Woman racer and philanthropist, 64-year-old Renee Brinkerhoff, has traveled the world for one cause – to rescue children around the globe from human trafficking. Through her car racing and fundraising arms, Valkyrie Racing/Valkyrie Gives, she is challenging the global community to take part in her $1mm-dollar mission – a philanthropic effort that coincides with her own endurance conquest to complete six rallies on seven continents for a total of 20,000 miles in a vintage Porsche 356 racecar – bringing her message on a global journey. Her final frontier will be this winter in Antarctica, where Renee takes on a final 356 miles on ice and attempts a land-speed record on the blue ice at Union Glacier.

"Human trafficking is the second largest illegal business in the world next to drug trafficking, and one major difference between them is drugs are consumable. They are used once and that’s it, whereas people can be sold over and over again…”

You Can Create Anything When You Trust Yourself

My guest Angella Johnson has experienced many key transitions in life including job loss, infertility, business failures, and successes. In this episode she shares tips to getting through hardships when the feeling of despair feels like it may last forever.

“The thing that matters most during difficult times is trusting yourself.”

After investing a quarter of a million dollars on coaches and courses, Angella Johnson found some cold-hard-TRUTH: Her soulful business could NOT fit into someone else's paint-by-numbers formulas no matter how hard she worked.

(And neither can yours.)

When the promise of "work harder and push harder" led to burnout and breakdown, Angella burned her business down in 2012 to rebuild with her intuition and spiritual connection in the forefront.

That's when she discovered that she wasn't the only one who was craving soul with strategy. This ignited her mission to bring magic, joy, ease, and intuition along with messaging and marketing strategy that created real results for her clients.

As the founder of The Collective for Creators and the creator of the Intuitive Marketing Matrix™ and the Soul Message Archetypes™, she blazes the path for entrepreneurs to trust themselves, break the rules, and radically change what they think is possible and make more money without the hustle or hype.

She has shared stages with visionary leaders including Lisa Nichols, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Lynn Twist, and works with global clients in her classes, courses, events, and as private clients.

What you will learn from this episode:

  • Why trusting yourself matters more than anything and the way to trust yourself is to ask expansive questions

  • How she started her business in 2008 after getting laid off just as the economy was crashing, then going on to build a 6-figure business within a year

  • Making peace with infertility, experiencing miscarriage and how it led her on a path to health

  • How she lost $40k on my first women's conference and how it led her to creating community AND making a profit

  • What are “expansive questions” and how asking these kinds of questions help to dissolve barriers and blocks, expands possibilities and builds a co-creation with the energy around you

Navigating the Trek through Life's Endings and New Beginnings

Passing through grief - turning your endings into beginnings

In this episode, Natalia Volz shines a light on a topic that many of us are uncomfortable talking about. Endings and grief - whether it’s from divorce or death is an inevitable and difficult part of life. So when Natalia found herself widowed at 48 with three children and overwhelmed with grief, she knew that she had to find a way through her pain if she was to survive and thrive again. Her experience led her to a new purpose in life. She started Passing Through Grief to help others to not get stuck in the overwhelming grief but instead pass through it and then launch a new life of clear purpose and wholehearted living.

Natalia Volz helps people get right with their endings – whether it is the death, divorce, or illness of a partner or parent. Her expertise arose from first-hand experience when her husband died at the age of 49 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, leaving her alone to raise their three children. Like so many who experience the death of a loved one, Natalia felt completely devastated, lost, alone and unclear as to how to navigate through the pain and get to the other side, where we can begin to rebuild our lives. In a culture that doesn’t like to talk about death and loss, Natalia found a way to move through her pain, and now guides people through the process of getting right with endings in their lives, often for an event that happened years earlier. Natalia is certified by the Grief Recovery Institute and is the author of Passing Through Grief.

"After experiencing loss - if you’re never able to get back to a place of peace then something was left unfinished after the ending that you need to work though.”

What You’ll Learn from This Episode:

  • Endings and changes are a big part of life, so we must learn how to navigate these transitional periods

  • Our culture treats endings such as chronic or terminal illness, death (i.e. lost the battle) or divorce as a failure. With failure there is shame, guilt, regret and embarrassment. It is close to impossible to make positive change from a place of shame and guilt.

  • Self-compassion is an important act while moving through an ending, through all the feelings that arise and finding our way forward.

  • Why our culture is more afraid of grief than death and how this belief left us ill-prepared to deal with grief and loss when it does occur.

  • The signs to look for that you or your loved one is still struggling and need help moving through their grief

  • With every ending comes a new beginning. Life is often referred to as a journey. Traversing a loss or difficult change is more of a trek. For a trek we need a guide to traverse the difficult terrain, to know where to stop and excavate into what happened, and to know when to move forward.

A Bridge to Wholeness

One Woman's Healing Jouney Closes A Vast Gap in Medicine

There are times when no matter how ill we are, repeated visits to the doctor reveal that "nothing is wrong." This was the case for Jennifer Crisp, an RN who had previously been a firm believer in the modality that was ultimately letting her down. In this episode, Jennifer shares the strange set of circumstances that led her to seek the help of a naturopath in treating what he finally determined to be Chronic Lyme Disease, a debilitating condition that at the time was still not recognized as a legitimate illness. She encourages healthcare providers to bridge the gap between the traditional western practice of medicine and the world of holistic alternative medicine at the intersection of health and wellness.

Jessica Rector, Founder of The Single Mom Movement, Keynote Speaker, Author

Jessica believes children of single moms deserve the same opportunities and possibilities as other children. She believes it’s near impossible to empower your children if you are not empowered, so she turned this philosophy of empowering the children of single moms into a business to better serve single moms and those who help and support them. It all began with the unexpected.

Jessica Rector thought she was leading a great life. She was parasailing, skydiving, shark diving, living in Norway, and volunteering in Africa. With three college degrees, she started a coaching business in order to help women. While working diligently during the day, she waited tables at night in a fine dining restaurant until her business could be self sustaining, when the unexpected happened.

She broke up with her boyfriend, and three days later, in a church bathroom, found out she was pregnant. She quickly darted out of the church building, crying and thinking the career she was working so hard for was now over. She would have to get a “real” job, and she knew that’s not where her heart was.

After a few conversations with the ex, she realized she wanted more. She and her baby deserved more. She found herself alone and scared. Outside of her family and a couple of friends, she didn’t tell anyone she was pregnant. She didn’t want to hear the judgments and stereotypes.

After seven months of keeping her pregnancy to a close group of people, Jessica started a blog called A Clueless Mom in order to help other single moms who might be feeling alone, scared, or isolated. While writing through her blog, she received positive support and feedback which encouraged her to continue sharing her story.

The more people she met, the more she shared her story and something amazing happened. People didn’t judge or stereotype her. They greeted her with I’m a single mom, I know a single mom, or I was raised by a single mom. Everyone knows a single mom. The more Jessica was warmly welcomed, the more it gave her permission to keep sharing which in turn allowed the recipients to feel comfortable enough to share their stories.

Then Jessica’s first defining moment came. A few months after her son was born, Jessica attended a speaker summit, because in the past year since finding out she was pregnant, Jessica had applied to several corporate jobs and was never called in for an interview to any, even the ones she was overqualified for. At this summit, a guest speaker came on stage and asked, “Why do you do what you do?”

He received answers a variety of different answers. It’s my passion. I love it. I like helping others. Then he said, “This is why I do what I do,” and put a picture up of his kids.

Jessica immediately cried. She knew right then, she couldn’t tell her new baby he would do and be anything he wanted if she wasn’t doing it. So she knew she had to follow what was in her heart.

Jessica turned her A Clueless Mom blog into a business helping moms and kept getting frustrated, because she wasn’t able to find resources, information, or support to help her as a single mom. She knew if she felt this way, others felt the same way. Then she turned her business and frustration into The Single Mom Movement to educate and empower single moms so they can better empower their kids. She has dedicated the rest of her professional life to serving single moms and those who help and support single moms.

After in depth research, Jessica kept finding the same thing…articles blaming single moms and categorizing their children. Jessica says, “It tears at my heart that children of single moms face a more challenging life filled with health, behavioral, cognitive, and social issues and stigmas. We can’t begin to understand what single moms need without first understanding who they are.” She wants to give single moms a voice, while changing public perception so “The world finally starts seeing us for who we are and not for who we aren’t.”

Single motherhood affects everyone. Jessica’s goal is for people to become proactive in supporting the movement and to educate the public by showing how single motherhood really affects them…in ways they may not realize and how they can help.

After her son was born, Jessica recognized her shame around being a single mom, and how it manifested itself in ways she never imagined like not telling people she was pregnant due to shame. She dug deep about shame…uncovering what this meant in her life, how to overcome it, and how she can help single moms everywhere recognize it and become shame resilient. Jessica can teach single moms about budgeting, time management, and self care, but she feels that’s like building a roof to a house when you need a solid foundation first. In order to have that solid foundation, single moms must start with fears, shame, worthiness, belonging, and love.

Jessica educates the public by being an advocate and speaking on behalf of family bills at the Texas State Congress hearings and travelling around the world as a keynote speaker presenting about these topics to leaders, organizations, companies, directors, women, moms, managers, and many others.

Jessica knows what it’s like to feel alone and isolated as a single mom. She wants to make sure every single mom knew she is not alone in her journey. So Jessica established The Single Mom Movement Community where single moms support and help other single moms in their journey. You are not alone. This community gives single moms a sense of belonging and love. We are all in this together…when you receive the support and help from this community, the more you’re able to thrive, find fulfillment, and be happy.

Jessica also consults with companies, organizations, and people ( social workers, non-profits, hospitals, pediatricians, OBGYNs, counselors, and therapists), who work with single parents or the children of single parents, to bridge the gaps in communications, development, processes, systems, and programs. After working with Jessica, these organizations, companies, and people are able to work more effectively and efficiently with single parents so they can build a life of fulfillment, success, happiness, and abundance, allowing families to thrive, the organizations and companies save money, and all tides rise.

Sandra Dee Robinson, Charisma on Camera

My guest this week is Sandra Dee Robinson! Beloved daytime television actress, speaker, passionate equine owner and wildlife conservation advocate, Sandra is acclaimed expert for developing true charisma on camera.

Through her organization, Charisma on Camera, she seeks to empower and educate people around the world to recognize the gifts that God has given them; not just personal talents but also the gift of nature, to heal and inspire, so that they may be able to powerfully create the impact in the world that they so uniquely have been called to do.

Sandra Dee Robinson is the go-to expert for brilliant people facing a big problem – getting stuck when it’s time to get in front of a camera and really connect with your audience. As the founder of Charisma on Camera, Sandra Dee provides transformational teachings through speaking, seminars, and a unique “Equine Experience” program, all serving to empower people with the ability to achieve true confidence on camera, and get their message out in a big way.

The techniques Sandra Dee has developed are a compilation of the best and most effective out there, mixed in with personal experiences from a career that continues to thrive after more than two decades, something only about 3 percent of her peers are able to do. Continually captivating audiences with her warmth, charm and honesty, she shares her personal journey from “knee-knocking, jittery mess” starting her career at 11, to landing her first leading role on national TV at 17, to excelling in her industry with two decades of leading roles on Sunset Beach, Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives and currently on the Emmy-nominated web series The Bay.

Sandra Dee’s secret struggles with extreme shyness during that time, especially when called up on to “be herself” as a host, speaker or spokesperson during live events, drove her on a quest to overcome the phobia of public speaking and presentation. She immersed herself with studying with industry experts and became master-certified in many teaching modalities and presentation techniques herself along the way.

Throughout her career, Sandra Dee has been driven by a love for animals and a passion to support rescue and advocacy issues. During her extensive work with animals, Sandra Dee has witnessed amazing transformations in adults and children affected by the power of their bond with living creatures. Her life-changing Horsepowered Leadership Training Clinics help people learn to control their energy and communicate at the most honest level as they interact with horses, nature’s preeminent readers of energy.

Weaving these lessons throughout her presentations is yet another of the reasons that Sandra Dee stands head and shoulders above the crowd, a catalyst for taking the fear out of on-camera appearances and empowering people with the confidence and skill to create powerful connections when it matters most.

Carol Stover, Professional Makeup Artist

My guest next week on Secondwind with Joyce Buford is Carol Stover, a professional makeup artist and photo stylist based in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area.  For 32 years she has worked all over the country as a key makeup artist for television, video, film, print and events such as weddings and Bat Mitzvahs.

She's been an artist since childhood, which allows her to see each person as unique and beautiful even before she starts.  Her approach to makeup is detailed and creative, bringing out the true inner spirit of her subject.  And with her special techniques in highlighting, contouring and precise blending, her subjects look far more photogenic than they ever have before.

She also holds seminars and workshops on makeup and personal style, as well as giving personal instruction in “camera-ready” makeup for models, performers and members of the news media.
